Maintaining the structural integrity of facilities in the public and private sectors is a critical component of any physical plant operation. And with the opening of each new building or continued operation of an existing structure is the need for maintenance and upkeep. Men and women who understand the construction trades and have the knowledge and expertise in areas related to mechanical, plumbing and electrical equipment are essential to day-to-day maintenance requirements, regardless of the size of the operation. The need is increasing. Average starting salaries vary depending upon the employer and experience. Entry-level hourly rates typically range from $8.25-12 per hour. For specialized mechanics, the hourly rate ranges from $18-24 per hour. These wages could be higher for unionized employees.
